Research interests

Ecosystem effects of suspension feeders (Atlantic menhaden, hard clams); physiological ecology of estuarine organisms; benthic-pelagic coupling; nutrient cycling and causes/effects of eutrophication; ecology of littoral systems

Research Experience Top

Present Marine Scientist, Ecosystem Modeling Program, Virginia Institute of Marine Science

  • Menhaden feeding experiments for "Modeling Atlantic menhaden in support of nutrient and multispecies management". Chesapeake Bay Program, Environmental Protection Agency. (PI’s: M.J. Brush, R.J. Latour, and E.A. Canuel)
  • Synthesis of data from the National Estuarine Research Reserve System-Wide Monitoring Program for the Mid-Atlantic region. Cooperative Institute for Coastal and Estuarine Environmental Technology (CICEET), NOAA. (PI’s: K.A. Moore and M.J. Brush)

2002 - 2005

Graduate research assistant, Virginia Institute of Marine Science

Thesis: Physiological ecology of aquacultured clams, Mercenaria mercenaria
Measured feeding rates of clams in the laboratory and field using original systems; clam respiration, excretion and egestion rates; collected and managed clam size data and analyzed growth rates; created physiological/ecological model for clam suspension feeding

2002 Laboratory technician, Epoch Biosciences, San Diego, CA
Purified manufactured DNA products by PAGE and C-18 purification, and ethanol precipitation; conducted quality control measures on products via gelelectrophoresis and spectrophotometry

2000 - 2001 Distinguished Majors Program, Environmental Science Dept., University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA

Thesis: Effects of thermal stress on clam hemocyte chemotaxis
2000 Estuarine ecology independent research,

Environmental Science Dept., University of Virginia Independent study on the effects of clamfiltering on suspended and sediment nutrients

2000 NSF REU Program, University of Maryland, ChesapeakeBiological Laboratory, Solomons, MD.

Utilized methods found in the literature to determine thechemotactic response of Mercenaria mercenaria hemocytes toQPX (quahog parasite unknown) in vitro.
