The Experiments

The Helo-deck was used for "on-deck incubations" of seawater samples. A pump supplied the incubator system with flow-through seawater to maintain incubations at seawater temperature. These incubators were used by many of the research groups throughout the cruise.

A separate incubator was setup on deck for large volume experiments. This one held an 80-liter carboy as well as several 20-liter carboys and 40-liter leakproof bags. Large volumes were used to more closely approximate natural conditions.

Another flow-through incubator was setup inside the ship for experiments to be run in the dark. Here Craig Carlson, BBSR and Mark Dennett, WHOI fill a leakproof bag with seawater for a dark experiment.

When working with incubators getting your hands/arms wet is inevitable. At such low temperatures (-2 to +4oC) you had to work quickly if you wanted to keep feeling in your fingers.
