The Department of Biological Sciences brings together biologists
from a variety of disciplines including physical biology, ecology, oceanography,
microbiology, evolutionary biology, and ecosystem modeling. Faculty are active in a wide range of research areas aimed at understanding the structure, function, and evolution of marine
and estuarine ecosystems, focusing on both benthic and planktonic components.
Faculty and students also enjoy close collaboration with scientists in other departments of SMS/VIMS. Our research is geared toward understanding the basic
driving forces in marine and estuarine systems on local and global scales.
Research is often applied to assist managers with real-life environmental
problems of local, national, and international significance.
