The vessels center maintains and operates a fleet of 40 vessels.

Located in Watermen's Hall, VIMS' visitor center features aquaria, audiovisual displays, computer presentations, and life-sized models to help you better understand and appreciate the marine ecosystems of Chesapeake Bay.

The Institute maintains and operates 6 pool cars (3 cars and 3 mini-vans) and 16 pool trucks (three are permanently assigned).

Cutting-edge research and education programs require costly facilities, technology, and equipment, competitive salaries for faculty, and scholarships to attract the best students. As state funding declines--and as public and private grant awards become increasingly more competitive--VIMS must build a substantial base of private support to guarantee its place among the world's leading marine science centers.

VIMS has internship opportunities for College and High School Students

To ensure that the VSC test of non-native oysters meets the highest standards of science and biosecurity, researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) have developed an independent program funded by NOAA to monitor the status of the oysters at each of the commercial grow-out sites. VIMS scientists will gather scientific data on numerous different aspects of the commercial trial.
