  • More than 50 multiple recapture events of the same tagged sea bass were recorded in 1999.  These events document that proper catching, handling, and releasing small sea bass can result in high survival and is useful in evaluating the effectiveness of minimum size limit restrictions.  Significant examples of multiple recapture events of the same tagged sea bass in 1999 include:
  1. Five recapture events for the same sea bass
A sea bass (9.75" TL) tagged at the New Point Comfort Rockpile on 9/24/99 was recaptured at the same site on 10/2/99 (8 DAL).  This fish was re-released with the tag in place and subsequently recaptured at the same site four more times: 10/29/99 (27 DAL), 10/30/99 (1 DAL), 10/31/99 (1 DAL), and 11/18/99 (18 DAL).  Total days at large between initial release and last recapture was 55.
  2. Three recapture events for the same sea bass
    • A sea bass (9.00" TL) tagged at the 4A Drydock Wreck on 6/8/99 was recaptured at the same site on 7/16/99 (38 DAL).  This fish was re-released with the tag in place and subsequently recaptured at the same site on 7/17/99 (1 DAL) and 9/12/99 (57 DAL).  Total days at large between initial release and last recapture was 96.
    • A sea bass (10.00" TL) tagged at the 4A Drydock Wreck on 7/17/99 was recaptured at the same site on 7/31/99 (14 DAL).  This fish was re-released with the tag in place and subsequently recaptured at the same site the same day and then on 9/25/99 (56 DAL).  Total days at large between initial release and last recapture was 70.
    • A sea bass (8.50" TL) tagged at the Chesapeake Light Tower Reef on 12/6/98 was recaptured at the same site on 4/25/99 (140 DAL).  This fish was re-released with the tag in place and subsequently recaptured at the Santore Wreck on 5/5/99 (10 DAL), then recaptured again at an unknown location on 9/11/99 (129 DAL).  Total days at large between initial release and last recapture was 279.
  3. Two recapture events for the same sea bass
50 sea bass (7.50-13.50" TL) were recaptured two times in 1999 between 0-382 DAL.  Of these 48 events, 32 events involved sea bass initially released at the 4A Drydock Wreck and recaptured at this site 30 out of 32 times (1-292 AL).
