Maritime Festivals & Tournaments
Marine extension specialists work with several waterfront communities to help organize classic Chesapeake Bay commercial fishing workboat events each year. Norfolk’s Harborfest exemplifies a premier celebration along the Eastern seaboard, and draws 50-75 workboats annually to compete in races and docking contests. Involvement in such events brings Virginia Sea Grant into direct contact with the waterfront businesses and coastal towns that have shaped Virginia’s maritime heritage. At the same time, it reminds participants of the unique link Sea Grant provides between marine trades, advisory services, and marine science.

Coastal Blueways
Virginia Sea Grant is pleased to announce the production of “Virginia’s Coastal Blueways” - a map highlighting the array of water trails established and under development in Virginia’s coastal zone. The map provides information about local history, traditional maritime uses, recreation, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Use it as a first step in planning your next paddling adventure!

A web-friendly version of the entire map and matrix of trail amenities is available here.
