VIMS Facilities Management

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Facilities Management is to effectively maintain and keep operational the campus facilities and grounds; plan for the renovation of existing and construction of new facilities; ensure that the campus physical environment is safe and enhances the efforts of the faculty, staff and students; and provide additional services in support of the Institute's programs.

The land area for the Gloucester Point campus is 40.587 acres, and 3.39 acres for the Wachapreague campus. The Institute also owns an additional 30.58 acres in Gloucester County consisting of Oak Island (30 acres) and Sarah's Creek (.58 acres).

The Department of Facilities Management performs the following functions in support of this mission:

  • Provide, maintain and repair utility services and building mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Maintain the structure, architectural finishes and appurtenances of facilities and the surrounding grounds and landscape features.
  • Provide custodial services and support for special functions to insure a clean environment for faculty, staff and students.
  • Assure a safe environment and maintain an effective emergency preparedness plan for fires, floods, power outages and other disasters.
  • Coordinate the campus facility short and long term planning as well as developing and managing capital improvement projects.
  • Develop and manage an effective maintenance reserve plan for the repair and replacement of the campus facilities and infrastructure.
  • Initiate, develop and manage energy conservation procedures and projects to achieve continued reductions in energy usage on campus.
  • Provide special services to the campus community such as key control; vehicle fleet management; recycling; and security.
