1st Place:  Pamela Reynolds. “Middle Marsh.” Intern Megan Gyoerkoe transports a seine net across Middle Marsh in the Rachel Carson Reserve (NC NERR) on her way to survey fishes and crabs in an eelgrass study site. 2nd Place: Paul Richardson. “Fat Gator.” An alligator lurks in the shallows in Everglades National Park, Florida.
3rd Place:  Wes Hudson. “Great Blue Heron.” A great blue heron (Ardea herodias) surveys the pond behind the beach parking lot at Gloucester Point. Honorable Mention: Brandon Conroy. “Crab Megalopa.” A crab "megalopa" collected from a MOCNESS tow during the ANACONDAS project studying the Amazon River plume. Collected at 6° 49.0649 N 49° 50.67 W. Honorable Mention: Aimee Halvorson. “Angel shark close-up.” This angel shark was caught by the VIMS Juvenile Trawl Survey in the lower Chesapeake Bay on July 6, 2010. The photo was taken at that time and the shark was released. Honorable Mention: Matt Mainor.  “Diatoms.” A collection of diatoms (predominantly of the genus Berkeleya) collected from the York River floway used to grow algae for the Chesapeake Algal Project (ChAP). Honorable Mention: Greg Mears. “Lobster.” A lobster collected off the coast of Massachusetts during a VIMS NEAMAP cruise. Honorable Mention: Loren Reller.  “Remnants of Irene.” A large piece of driftwood on the VIMS beach a few days after Hurricane Irene.
Honorable Mention: Sarah Sumoski. “Seagrass Soaking.” Freshly collected seagrasses soak in mesh bags in South Bay on Virginia's Eastern Shore before being transported back to VIMS to aid in seagrass restoration.
