Duties and Interests
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the scientific data archives of the Institute, containing environmental monitoring and research data for the Chesapeake Bay and mid-Atlantic region. The archives include data collected by Institute scientists as well as outside agencies and organizations. Some of these collections are continuous to the early 1900's, and are active today.
  • Serves also as consultant to faculty, students and staff on a variety aspects of scientific data management. Involved at the investigator level in the design and technical implementation of a variety of data acquisition and retrieval systems in place at the Institute. These include meteorological, hydrological, fisheries, and benthic monitoring systems, as well as near real-time transaction based systems.
  • Interests include the development and implementation of innovative policies, procedures, and techniques for the cataloguing, preservation, retrieval, presentation, and delivery of environmental scientific research data. This involves research on many presently unresolved issues related to digital data archiving, such as standards development for metadata, authentication and verification of datasets, visualization techniques for quality assurance, and levels of aggregation for presentation (ie. reduced views of data). Has served on State, Regional, and National committees related to the development of environmental scientific data management policies. Currently a member of the Spatial Data Transfer Standard Project Team, a subcommittee of the Virginia Council on Information Management.
