EXAMPLES OF IMPROVED BROOD STOCKS FOR AQUACULTURE:

OYSTERS

  • Disease-resistant oyster stocks.

  • Domesticated holdings of Tangier, Chincoteague, and other local varieties.

  • Genetically manipulated stocks, rendered sterile.

OTHER SPECIES

  • Clam stocks from various geographic regions along the Atlantic coast.

  • Bay scallops.

  • Soft-shelled clams.

TEST SITES FOR OYSTERS

  • Oyster strains are tested throughout the region with other research institutions.

  • The Center maintains its own brood stock farm and test sites on the Eastern Shore, and frequently uses the York River adjacent to VIMS as a test site.

  • Future strain development will require a large number of additional sites.

OBJECTIVE OF GARDNER RESEARCH EXTENSION NETWORK:

  • To promote and coordinate test sites with cooperating gardeners for Center projects

  • Sites are set up on an as-needed basis, depending on the project

  • GREEN cooperators would provide grow-out gear (if possible) and assistance with the care and maintenance of stocks

There are over 1000 oyster gardeners in Virginia alone.   Cooperators will have access to the experimental designs and results as they are obtained.  VMRC General Permit #3 is required for participation.  Call (757) 247-2254 for an application.
